Critical Beat: The Avengers Trailer #2

The first Avengers trailer didn’t offer us much we didn’t already know.  The basic premise is pretty simple.  Loki will be leading an invading army that lead to Nick Fury bringing together the team of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and of course the Hulk.

Just having these characters together in a movie were enough to get the average fan to see it.  But that’s now who Marvel needs to convince to go see this movie.  They need to convince the casual attendee that this is the movie to see, and in order to do that the second trailer needs substance.  That’s what I was hoping to see with the release of the second trailer.

And even though we didn’t get more insight into the villain, I still don’t care.  That’s not what this movie is going to be about, and that’s what this trailer lets us know.  This movie will be about why this team even exists, why they shouldn’t work together, and how they overcome those obstacles.

The character driven approaches that the trailers have been focusing on have reinforced my belief that Joss Whedon was the right choice for this film.  After seeing his character driven shows that juggled large casts (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse) as well as his run on Astonishing X-Men, I think that he will do well to get at the heart of who these people are.  And then there will be the explosions.  But the heart will come first.

Beyond that, here a some of the cool moments from the trailer:

[0:25]  “Director Fury, I think it’s time.”  Your damn right it is.

[0:43]  Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk, and by that look in his eye Banner seems to be in some sort of control.  This suggest a more focused Hulk than we’ve seen so far.

[0:59]  The Iron Man suit is removed from Tony Stark with so much style you have to love the guy.

[1:06]  Early signs of struggle for this team

[1:10]  Finally, some Maria Hill.  Not much, but as I am a big Cobie Smulders fan I can’t wait to see more.

[1:11]  Is this the first mission for the team?  Or when they first encounter Thor?  Notice how Hawkeye, Black Widow, and the Hulk are not yet present.  I have a theory that Hawkeye and the Black Widow are on the team in order to balance the ego’s of the powered heroes.  As well as to keep them in check.  There has to be some reason these two are on a team with such powerful people.

[1:18]  Why is Black Widow fighting Hawkeye in this scene?

[1:20]  Cap is being a bad-ass in this skydiving scene.  Reminds me of the Ultimates 2 #1.

[1:25]  This answers the great question:  Vibranium can repel Thor’s hammer.

[1:30]  This is just an eerie scene of mankind bowing to Loki.  Things will get dire for us before they get better.

[1:31]  “We’re not a team, we’re a time bomb.”  It makes sense that the most volatile member on the team will be the one who recognizes their faults first.  Will it really be the Hulk that shows the team how to overcome their petty differences and unite as one?  Looks to be that way.

[1:39]  Why is Thor locked up?  Does he at one point fight to save his brother before he realizes that Loki has gone too far?

[1:54]  I cheered the first time I saw this.  The Hulk catches Iron Man and saves him from a nasty fall, thus proving that the Hulk will be a team player in this movie.

[2:00]  Assemble!  I know this was in the Super Bowl TV spot, but it’s just too awesome to leave out.

[2:20]  Is this the Leviathan we’ve been hearing about?  Looks to be that way.

Well, that’s what I have to say.  If you have anything to add sound off in the comments below.
