Firefly 10th Anniversary Panel

July 14, 2012 Leave a comment

Like many of you, I was unable to attend Comic-Con in San Diego this year.  But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it from afar.

One of the most anticipated events for me was the Firefly 10th Anniversary panel.  I discovered the show on DVD around the time Serenity was being released in theaters and I instantly fell in love with it.  So when I heard about a reunion panel I was quite excited.

Now, this panel will actually air as a special on the Science Channel (which has had some success airing Firefly reruns as of late), but that won’t be for some time and like many people I don’t get that channel.  Lucky for us, the folks over at Things From Another World (TFAW) were able to film the panel and put it up on YouTube.

I’m not going to try and recap the 52 minute YouTube video for you, because I don’t want rob you of the experience.  Just know that the panel includes Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, Sean Maher, Adam Baldwin, Tim Minear, Jose Molina, and about 4,000 other Browncoats.  The entire panel was very heartfelt and sincere.  It’s amazing to see what this show means to not only the fans, but the cast and crew after all these years.

If the embedded video doesn’t work you can always view it here.  And if you don’t have the time to watch the entire panel, The Huffington Post has a pretty decent recap here.

Thanks for playing along.  We’re still flying.

Chucksters vs. The Final Frontier: A farewell letter

January 28, 2012 Leave a comment

“Chuck, I fell for you a long long time ago. After you fixed my phone, and before you started defusing bombs with viruses.”

When thinking about the Chuck series finale, this quote always came to mind.  It’s a line spoken by Sarah in the episode “Chuck vs. The Other Guy” in season three when he asks her if she loves him.  It’s one of those lines where the writers just nailed it.  I can’t think of a better way to describe when I knew that this was the show for me.  In fact, I’m not even going to try.

Then I ask myself why.  What is it about Chuck that kept me coming back for these past five years.  Again, the writers did my work for me.  Below is a scene from the season 4 episode “Chuck vs. The Push Mix”.

Here is a show that is best described as a comedic science fiction spy drama.  It has computers that a person can download into their brain.  Suped up Nerd Herders.  Evil spy organizations bent on world domination.  It has everything that you would want in a fun show.  But at the same time it has these great moments.  Moments that are not overly flashy.  But they are funny.  They are sad.  They are real.  Intertwined within all of the crazy spy adventures of our team, there is this sense that these are real people.  And over the past five years, Chuck never lost that.  Even during the finale.  In its final moments, Chuck made me laugh.  It made me cheer.  I was scared, yet full of hope.  I even fought back a few tears.  That is how I will remember this show.  It won’t be the missions.  It won’t be the cool gadgets or the pop culture references.  It will be those moments that can only be described as real.

So to Chuck, Sarah, Casey, and the rest of the Buy More gang I say thank you and farewell.

To Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, and Adam Baldwin:  If you ever want to save the world again, you know where to find us.
